New research suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who stop traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a prominent medical journal points out that while obese individuals can lose substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People purchasing such drugs must be cognizant of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery means a return to original weight within about one and a half years.
Comparing Approaches
The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving thousands of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the amplified weight return.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.
"Artificially providing GLP-1 levels far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to hunger is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians contend that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "underscore the long-term nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Experiences
Individuals who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if individuals have not developed lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is greater among women than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- A large proportion obtain the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and long-term success relies on combined behavioural management.
