The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in fighting online hate and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to campaigns to enact laws governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will not stand for these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported France in criticizing the move.
The bans were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.
