Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, submitted to a US district court, targets the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"California's redistricting scheme represents a brazen power grab that violates civil rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will withstand legal scrutiny.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and they are likely to face defeat in the judicial system," stated a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The legal challenge asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized race as a factor to significantly advantage Hispanic voters in contravention of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," argued a high-ranking representative from the Civil Rights Division.
Political Context
The legal battle represents the most significant response by Democrats in the continuing redistricting war that began in Texas and has extended to multiple states.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have implemented partisan maps, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with nearly 65% of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to flip just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will persist in implementing its political program or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible additional obstacles.
