"Any idea when you're interviewing Haim?" an inquiry pops up. "I was hoping to ask if I can be their fourth member."

There is only one problem: I also desires to be the Haims' additional sibling. What's more, we are in plentiful company. Multiple celebrated supporters have also begged for the honor.

It's clear something is going on. The siblings Este, Danielle and Alana started their path performing shows at local delicatessens with their family. Now they're multiple Grammy Award contenders.

Like all the most iconic groups, they're a tight-knit unit. Their visuals repeatedly feature them striding in sync down the avenues of Los Angeles. In concert, they jam with such boundless happiness you find yourself thinking, "I'd love to be part of that, too."

"The amount of times on tour that audience members approached us and said, 'Seeing you perform, I bought a guitar'," remarks Alana, the most junior of the sisters. "That's the greatest honor. It is a prize in itself. We've done our job if we can inspire young girls to start a band."

"Therefore everyone are welcome to be the next member of Haim."

Award Recognition

The band have called into their homes, where they're recovering after an extensive tour in support of their latest album, I Quit.

They're right now reeling from the news it's been in the running for Best Rock Album at the Grammy Awards – with Haim the very first female band ever in contention for the award.

"I tune into the lists every year, so it almost feels like an out-of-body experience when your name is called," says Alana. "I had to call my sisters to say, 'Did I hear this right or am I imagining things'?"

The weight of the nomination isn't lost on the trio.

"We truly set out to make a guitar-driven album this time, so it's a major achievement," continues Alana. "But we're just thankful for the female artists that came before us."

Emotional Upheaval and Humour

The record was born from a time of personal change. All three sisters ended up single, and the music captures that unique transitional period where you're happy to be free, but not quite ready to start anew.

The words detail endings and partings. The sisters want love, but not the kind of love they've got. You can hear them figuring out in real life who they aspire to be.

"I love summary, yes," responds Danielle. "I Quit is kind of like a mantra. You have to consciously practice blocking the outside opinions and saying, 'It doesn't matter to me what people think'."

Evolution of Music

That newfound toughness called for a fresh approach – more unpolished and powerful than any of the music the band had done before.

For Danielle, who helped produce the album, that was founded on the drum sound.

"The drum sound is such a nuanced thing, and I care so much about it," she states.

"'Journey of the drum sound' will be the title of our biography," laughs Alana. "Our motto is, our albums cannot begin until we find the perfect drum sound."

Stories and Shared Camaraderie

The trio's honesty shaped the album's rollout, where the sisters disclosed some of their personal misadventures.

Someone ended things with Este over a medical concern. Alana shared a story of travelling to spend New Year's Eve with someone, only to receive a high five at midnight.

"Experiencing these setbacks, you just feel like there's no light," says Alana. "So to be able to share those stories and have them tell you wilder stories, it's incredible."

An Assured Future

One can easily sense a evolution in the band. These days, Haim are more assured of their position in the music world.

They're festival headliners, with chart-topping albums and an worldwide audience.

However the band will consistently be their primary focus.

"Me and my siblings have been performing since I was four," says Alana. "It feels as if no other path that we were destined for. And I'm really grateful we've made it and we're still making music."
